Features:
- tubular in shape, bulky and tapers at both ends
- has an elongated head that is bowed and appears V-shaped when viewed from above
- 2-5 deep longitudinal creases on the throat
- small pointed-tipped flippers and wide flukes with a medium notch
- no dorsal fin, just a low hump with ridges (sometimes called knuckles) along the top of the tail stock
- two blowholes
- 130-180 yellowish baleen plates on each side of the roof of the mouth
- colour: mottled grey with white, yellow or orange patches due to whale lice, barnacles are also commonly found covering the whale; calves are dark with wrinkled skin and no barnacles
