Features:

• small but robust
• tiny head, steeply sloping forehead, poorly defined beak
• narrow mouth and a protruding lower jaw
• small pointed flippers
• slightly curved to almost triangular dorsal fin
• relatively broad flukes and a thick keel on the top and bottom of the tail stock
• 19-28 teeth on each side of upper and lower jaws
• males are much thicker in body than females
• colour: shiny black, with large white flanks; dorsal fin may be seen outlined in white; lips and the edge of the tail flukes are also sometimes white; occasionally a few all-white, all-black and piebald individuals have been observed
