Features:
- small but robust
- tiny head, steeply sloping forehead, poorly defined beak
- narrow mouth and a protruding lower jaw
- small pointed flippers
- slightly curved to almost triangular dorsal fin
- relatively broad flukes and a thick keel on the top and bottom of the tail stock
- 19-28 teeth on each side of upper and lower jaws
- males are much thicker in body than females
- colour: shiny black, with large white flanks; dorsal fin may be seen outlined in white; lips and the edge of the tail flukes are also sometimes white; occasionally a few all-white, all-black and piebald individuals have been observed
