Lutra - early European name   canadensis - Latin; of Canada
Order: Carnivora
Family: Mustelidae

The streamlined, elegant otter is 86-120 cm long, and weighs between 5 and 14 kg. Their short thick fur is grayish brown below, lighter about the throat and muzzle, and rich dark brown above. Lutra's blunt, small head has a flattened, bulbous nose, and dense whiskers which help to sense the movement of prey even in murky water.

An extremely adept swimmer, the otter has fully webbed toes, small ears and valvular nostrils which seal upon submergence.
