Introduction

Approximately 1500 different species of sea stars occur in the world's oceans. They live on sandy or muddy bottoms and are often seen crawling over rocks and shells. Sea stars are found mostly in coastal waters and are especially abundant from Puget Sound to the Aleutian Islands - there are 70 species around Vancouver Island alone!
