| Pukaskwa National Park is located in the Canadian Shield on the north shore of Lake Superior. It
was established in 1978 and is Ontario's largest national park, protecting 1878 sq. km of boreal
forest and rugged coastline. The park is a wilderness of mixed-conifer forests, rock-rimmed lakes
and tumbling rivers. The waters teem with walleye, pike and trout, while the abundant wildlife
includes moose, wolves, black bears and a small herd of the rare woodland caribou.
The legacy of the last Ice Age is evident in the region's tortuous rivers and myriad of lakes,
ponds and bogs. The park is bounded to the south by the Pukaskwa River and also includes
Oiseau Creek and the Cascade, North Swallow, White, White Spruce, White Gravel, and Willow
rivers. Its isolated lakes include Birch, Louie, Widgeon and Gornupkagama. Hattie Cove and
Oiseau Bay are two of the highlights along the Lake Superior coastline. The cooling influence of
this massive lake (the largest in the world) allows rare Arctic alpine plants to grow in
microclimates along the coast. Try this link for more info: |
