Kouchibouguac National Park was established in 1979 and protects 239 sq. km in eastern New Brunswick. Situated at the head of the Northumberland Strait, Kouchibouguac represents an intricate blend of coastal and inland habitats. The park contains significant terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems in the form of evergreen forests, fields, sand dunes, salt marshes, bogs, estuaries and rivers. Its many water bodies include: Kouchibouguac River and Lagoon, Black River, Jardine Lake and St. Louis River and Bay. The park's wildlife includes piping plovers and common terns that nest on the barrier islands, striped bass that spawn in the estuaries, white- tailed deer and black bears that roam the forests, and grey and harbour seals that congregate in the lagoons and estuaries.
