Size: L: 60 cm. Wt: 650-750g. Males and females similar. Adult plumage attained in third year. This species is not seasonally dimorphic.

Adult: crown white with plumes; head and bill black, with white cheek patch; body dark grey; legs yellow.

Juvenile (all years): bill black; body and head dark brown with white spotting; legs yellow.
