Size: L: 60cm. Wt: Males: 1130-1210 g. Females: 910-960 g. Sexually dimorphic in colour and size. Males of this species exhibit eclipse plumage.
Male: head dark metallic green, with backswept crest; eye red; bill red; white band around neck; breast streaked reddish-brown; flanks pale greyish; back black with white wing-edges showing; row of white patches at shoulder.
Female: head pale chestnut, with backswept crest; eye red; bill orange; chin, throat, and breast buffy; flanks and back grey-brown; white speculum, bordered with black.
Eclipse Male: similar to female, but with male wing pattern.
Juvenile: similar to female, but with spotting on chin, and darker mottling on back.
