Short-Billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus)
At one time, the short-billed dowitcher was a popular game bird, but when its populations became seriously depleted, hunting also decreased. Despite this, it is very approachable in the field, and is relatively unafraid of humans.
The short-billed dowitcher breeds in Alaska and northern British Columbia, and winters on the Pacific coast, from California south into Mexico.
Breeding occurs in freshwater environments. For a complete species account, visit the Great Lakes section.
