Least Sandpiper (Calidris minutilla)
This bird, the smallest of the sandpipers, was once heavily hunted for its delicious meat, but it is now protected.
The least sandpiper breeds in northern Canada and Alaska, as well as in Newfoundland and the Hudson Bay lowlands. In winter, it migrates to the southern Atlantic and Pacific coast regions of the United States, and to Mexico.
Breeding occurs in freshwater environments. For a complete species account, visit the Great Lakes section.
