Common Loon (Gavia immer)

Loons have excellent underwater vision - all the better to catch their favorite food, fast swimming fish.

The common loon breeds on freshwater lakes throughout Canada, Alaska, and on the coast of Greenland, but in the winter it is found primarily along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America, and in the Great Lakes, where water remains open.

Freshwater is required for breeding. For a complete species account, visit the Great Lakes section.
