Scaphiopus - derived from the Greek words scaphio, meaning spade and pous, meaning foot; the literal translation: "spadefoot"
intermontanus - of Latin origin: inter, meaning between and montanus, meaning "of mountains"
This spadefoot has a built in shovel!
Spadefoot toads are named because of the enlarged tubercle or "spade" on each hind foot which enables them to dig burrows efficiently. The Great Basin spadefoot is less common than the Plains spadefoot in Canada.
