Introduction

Bufo - from the Latin bufonis, for toad

fowleri - named after S.P. Fowler, one of the first naturalists in Massachusetts

The toad that screams!

Fowler's toad is now considered a separate species, but it was once deemed a subspecies of Bufo woodhousei. Its call is a piercing scream, but females do not choose males based on their call as some other species do. Instead, they select older, larger males as mates.
