Bufo - from the Latin bufonis, meaning toad
hemiophrys - the Latin word for eyebrow, referring to the pronounced cranial crest between and
behind the eye
A very close relative of the American toad, these two species interbreed where their ranges overlap and some researchers consider them to be one species. The warts and parotid glands of these toads produce a poison which is an effective deterrent to some predators.
