Brief synopsis of current research:
Research in my laboratory is focused on nitrogen metabolism and excretion in aquatic animals. We have looked at early developmental stages of teleost fish, aquaculture of Arctic char, and mechanisms of urea transport in elasmobranchs. We have also examined the influence of the external environment (eg. water pH, ion composition) on nitrogen metabolism and excretion. Our approach has been to combine physiological measurements on rates of excretion and concentrations of end products with enzyme and mRNA analysis.
