Sea Lamprey Control Centre (SLCC)

Sea Lamprey Control Centre

In 1966, the SLCC was built at Sault Ste. Marie to oversee lamprey control measures and research. It is operated by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). The SLCC contains a lab, warehouse, aquarium, and maintenance and chemical storage facilities. The sea lamprey control program is conducted from here, and it houses the satellite research laboratory of the Great Lakes Laboratory for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences which is a division of the Central and Arctic region of the DFO but is based at the National Water Research Institute in Burlington, Ontario. The sea lamprey control program manages the application of lampricidal chemicals in an effort to limit lamprey populations in the Great Lakes ecosystem.
