Freshwater Institute (FWI)
Freshwater InstituteEstablished in 1972 at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, the FWI is the major regional laboratory for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). The FWI complex contains research laboratories, a library, a small craft harbours facility, a solar warehouse, a wastewater treatment plant, an ozone waste treatment facility, and two auditoriums. It is also the headquarters for the Central and Arctic Region of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The FWI is involved in freshwater, marine and Arctic science, fish habitat management and the fish inspection program, which now is operated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
