Experimental Lakes Area (ELA)

The water bodies of the Experimental Lakes Area

In 1968, the ELA began as the primary facility for biological and chemical research on freshwater environments in the Central and Arctic regions of Canada. Situated near Kenora in northwestern Ontario, it is operated by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), whose regional headquarters are at the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg. The ELA is involved in fish habitat research, as well as in co-operative work with forestry and hydroelectric companies. Its goals are to identify threats to aquatic ecosystems, to understand human impacts on watersheds and lakes, to develop methods of preserving, restoring and enhancing ecosystems, and to educate the public on environmental protection.
