Recreational fishing is an important economic activity in Canada. A 1995 survey revealed that over 4.2 million adult anglers fished in this country and spent $4.9 billion. Fishermen caught more than 254 million fish and just over 113 million of those were kept. Almost half of the fish were caught in Ontario, with trout comprising 30.5% of all fish retained. Other fish include perch (17.2%), walleye (14.7%), smelt (7.9%), and northern pike (5.1%).
